Hello Everyone, やあ、みんな元気かい

At Whooper's request, I have made a few notes about some British classical guitarists.
I hope that the information will be useful and that perhaps members may be tempted
to buy some of their recordings—some free recordings are mentioned below.

ウーパーの願いでイギリスのクラッシク・ギタリストについて若干書いてみるね。僕はこういった情報が
皆の役に立って多分何人かは録音を買いたくなるだろう。ただのやつも書いとくよ。

Julian Bream—Born in London in 1933, he has been a tremendous ambassador for
the guitar and its relatives, especially the lute. Many composers have written pieces for
him e.g. Malcolm Arnold, Lennox Berkeley, Leo Brouwer, Alan Rawsthorne, Michael Tippett
and William Walton among others. I recommend the DVD "Guitarra" in which he explores
the history of the classical guitar in Spain, with many musical examples played on guitars
of the period.

ジュリアン・ブリーム、1933年ロンドン生まれ。彼はギターと親戚達、特にリュートね、の偉大な大使を務めて来た
んだ。多くの作曲家達、例えば、マルコム・アーノルド、レノックス・バークレー、レオ・ブローウェル、アラン・ロースソン、
マイケル・チペット、そしてウイリアム・ウオルトンなんかが、曲を献呈して来てる。僕はDVDの”Guitarra"がお薦めだ。
彼はこの中でスペインのギター史を当時の楽器を使って沢山紹介してる。

Graham Anthony Devine—He was born in Liverpool, in 1971 and teaches at Trinity
College, London. If you have never heard his playing, you should certainly listen to the Naxos
recordings he has made. His "Guitar Music of Brazil" is wonderful, as is his "British Guitar Music"
which contains works by Richard Rodney Bennett, Lennox Berkeley, Peter Maxwell Davies, Alan
Rawsthorne, William Walton. He tours quite a lot, if he comes to Japan be sure to not to miss
the chance to hear him play.

グラハム・アントニー・デバイン、1971年リバプールの生まれでロンドンのトリニテイー・カレッジで教えてるよ。
聞いたことが無ければNaxosの録音を聞かないといけないよ。”Guitar Music of Brasiz"は素晴らしいし、
”British Guitar　Music”にはリチャード・ロドニー・ベネット、レノックス・バークレイ、ピーター・マクスウェル・デービス、
アラン・ロースソン、ウイリアム・ウオルトンといった連中の素晴らしい曲が入ってる。彼は良く演奏旅行してるから
若し日本に来るようなことがあったら見逃しちゃいけないよ。

John Duarte—was born in Sheffield in 1919. Sadly, he died in 2004. He composed nearly
150 works for guitar and you can hear some of his best compositions on Antigoni Goni's excellent
Naxos CD. His "English Suite Opus 31" is delightful. John Duarte's friends included Andres Segovia
and Ida Presti. He worked professionally as a jazz musician playing guitar, trumpet and double
bass—I never heard him play but I wanted to mention him because his compositions are so
important.

を書いてる。NaxosのCDでAntigoni　Goniが傑作を何曲が弾いてるから聞くことが出来るよ。彼の"English Suite

ジャズも専門的にやっていた。聞いたことは無いけど言っておきたいよ。何故なら彼の作品は非常に重要だからさ。

Eric Hill—You must visit his website at www.erichillguitardownloads.co.uk as Eric has
decided to give away all of his recordings. He was a popular concert guitarist and made several
excellent classical albums. He is now very interested in jazz and has included his latest album in
his free downloads. He plans to give away future recordings too.

John Mills—I think John Mills is Britain's best kept guitar secret! You will find very little
information about him on the internet. He studied with Andres Segovia and John Williams and is
or was head of guitar at the Welsh College of Music and a professor at the Royal Academy of Music.
It was my privilege to hear him play recently—he is certainly the finest guitarist I have ever heard!
So far as I know, there are no recordings available at present and he focusses upon his teaching.
He has published "The John Mills Guitar Tutor" and "Guitar Music from the Student Repertoire
(with CD)".

John Williams—I almost forgot! Of course, he was born in Australia in 1941. His father, Len
Williams, had emigrated from England to Australia in the 1930s but the family came back to England
in 1952. Later, John studied piano at the Royal College of Music in London and then established its
guitar department. I expect many of you know that Len Williams started a guitar school in London
but you may not know that he founded a monkey sanctuary in Cornwall! www.monkeysanctuary.org
The sister of one of my friends used to work there!

ジョン・ウイリアムス、おお！忘れるとこだった。当然だね。彼は1941年にオーストラリアで生まれた。彼の父親Lenは
30年代にイギリスからオーストラリアに移住したが一家は1952年に戻ってきた。その後ジョンはロンドンの王立音楽学校
でピアノを習いそれからギター課を創設したんだ。Lenはロンドンでギターの学校を始めたのは君達の中で多くの人が
知ってるとは思うが彼はコーン・ウオールで「お猿さんの聖域」www.monkeysanctuary.org も作ったんだよ。友達の
妹がそこでよく働いてたんだ。

I had better not make too strong a claim for John Williams being a British guitarist or I will upset our
Australian friends. Incidentally, I could make a small claim for Frederick Noad, who was born in
Belgium and moved to England when he was quite young before leaving to work in America. I expect
his books "Solo Guitar Playing 1 & 2" are available in Japan.

ジョンの事をイギリスのギタリストとあまり強く言わないほうが良いと思う。オーストラリアの友人達をびっくりさせるからね。
ついでにフレデリック・ノードにも少し触れておこう。彼はアメリカで活躍する前幼い時にベルギーからイギリスに移り住ん
でたんだ。彼の本、 "Solo Guitar Playing 1 & 2" が日本でも手に入るのを期待してるよ。

Of course, I have only mentioned a very few of our British guitarists—but I have written too many
words already!
